Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna and Mixed Veggies

Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna and Mixed Veggies

There are some meals that you enjoy at restaurants that you feel like you can't possibly make yourself.  We felt that way about ahi tuna steaks. It's always prepared exactly rare enough so that you get the perfect amount of flavor. Cooking it must be such a challenge, right? WRONG. This recipe could not be any simpler. Also, this whole dish took under 20 minutes to prepare. Our kind of recipe for sure.

Ahi tuna steaks are rich in protein and low in fat. Talk about a power food! We buy frozen steaks and allow them to defrost for about 12 hours in the fridge before preparing them. Also, we use sesame oil for the pan-searing, which is effective at high heats and also has been known to offer health benefits such as improved hair and skin health. Coat the steaks in additional sesame seeds for a perfect outer crunch and enjoy!

And where do we begin with these Asian-inspired mixed veggies? Plenty of room for creativity here, but we used bok choy and baby bellas. Stir fry these veggies and top with soy sauce and sesame seeds! See, that wasn't that hard! Bon appetite!

Ingredients:

Ahi tuna steaks for 2:

  • Two ahi tuna steaks (about 0.75 lb)
  • ~3 tbsp Sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds to coat
  • Pickled ginger to garnish

 Mixed veggies:

  • 3 cups chopped bok choy
  • 2 cups sliced baby bella mushrooms
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • Salt, Pepper, and Garlic Powder

How we did it:

  1. The vegetables take longer to cook then the tuna steaks, seriously! So, start by heating up a non stick pan and pouring in the tbsp of sesame oil. Throw in the veggies and then generously add salt, pepper, and Garlic Powder. Stir occasionally.
  2. For the Tuna heat up 1-2 tbsp sesame oil in a separate pan and wait until oil is hot (if you drop in a sesame seed it should sizzle). Brush Tuna with sesame oil and coat with sesame seeds.
  3. When the oil is hot add in a tuna steak. Cook for only 2-3 minutes each side. Be careful not to overcook, they go pretty quickly. Add in the last tbsp of sesame oil and repeat process for the other tuna steak.
  4. To finish off the veggies add the soy sauce and stir until mostly absorbed.
  5. Plate mixed veggies, sprinkle with leftover sesame seeds and add the sliced ahi tuna on top. Garnish with picked ginger.
